Latest Arrests
An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law. -                               Martin Luther King, Jr

Campaigning to make the oppression of fathers visible includes painting protests, when the doors of father-cut-off organisations are painted with purple paint.
This may include anonymous mail to the press giving reasons why a door had been painted purple, or painting in bright daylight to be arrested for publicity.

Breaking News July 2003:

CAFCASS Worker sentenced for perjury. perverting the course of Justice, lies and abusing position of trust. Read Portsmouth News

Another Father arrested in Anti-CAFCASS Protest

A Portsmouth father was arrested at around 10.30am this morning in the latest direct action against CAFCASS.

The door of the regional CAFCASS office in Portsmouth was painted in 'equal parenting' purple by Paul Summerfield.

Later, with Shaun O'Connell, he visited the offices and had a meeting with Pam Merritt the team manager. The police were called and Paul admitted to painting the door.

Police arrested Paul on suspicion of criminal damage.

Police interviewed Paul and remarked that "there must be something special about the colour purple".

One Police officer told Paul that he had his own problems concerning access to his children, and that as a father he had no rights.

As in other purple door protests, the police seemed to enjoy the atmosphere of the protest, and idendified with the purple door protestors. This raises mayor security concerns for organisations that are involved in cutting children off from their parents.

Paul was eventually released at 4 pm from Portsmouth Central Police Station. He has since been charged.

Background:

CAFCASS replaced the discredited Probation Officer Court Welfare System (CWO) in 2001. CAFCASS was set up to reform the treatment of excluded parents.

Within one year CAFCASS has provoked ever more desperate reaction by excluded parents, many of whom are now being arrested.

The action comes after a damning dossier was released on CAFCASS which included the following disturbing facts:

1.  The majority of CAFCASS Officers are ex Probation Officers used to dealing with hardened criminals.

2.  Only 1 in 7 CAFCASS Officers has received any training.

3.  They have NO formal qualifications.

4.  Shockingly, the training consists of just one 2 day course – less than a Parking Warden. There is NO official training budget whatsoever.

5.  CAFCASS has NO defined guidelines and NO complaints procedure.

6.  CAFCASS keep NO records and do not research into the outcomes of the cases they have been involved in (eg figures on children's suicide and teenage pregnancy five years after CAFCASS involvement). This means they have NO way of knowing whether they are achieving the best outcomes for children and their parents.

7.  To further compound problems, massive numbers of CWOs are leaving because of these problems. CAFCASS faces a major recruitment crisis.

8.  According to Dr Buchanan, Head of the Family Division Research Team at Oxford University, CAFCASS handles around 35,000 cases each year affecting an estimated 80 – 100,000 children per annum.

9.  This equates to over a million children in the past decade alone.

10. According to Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, President of the Family Division, 40% of fathers lose contact with their children after 2 years. We believe this results from the actions of the Family Courts.

11. Anthony Hewson, the Chairman of CAFCASS, and Ipswich Team Manager Judith Hubert, are now trying to put a gloss on CAFCASS. They ‘may’ introduce new national standards and complaints procedures in 2003. Many critics believe that not only will this be too little too late for many families. It still does not address the CAFCASS staff's complete lack of appropriate training for dealing with sensitive family matters.
